An Interview with Donna Edge, CPA

1. What does the title CPA mean to you? To me, being a CPA is about building relationships with my clients and being a resource to you throughout the year, not just at tax time.

2. Why did you become a CPA? When I graduated with my Accounting Degree from Old Dominion University (Norfolk, VA) in 1995, I did not plan on going into public accounting. However, that was where the jobs were. I worked for two CPA firms while in college and over the next 4 years getting tax and bookkeeping experience. When my son was born in 1999 I was very blessed to be a stay at home Mom. My daughter was born in 2003 and I was able to continue being at home. When she started school I realized I needed something to occupy my time, but I still wanted the freedom/flexibility to be with my family. This led me to start my Bookkeeping business out of my home. About six months into this, I felt the Lord leading me to get my CPA license. My first thought was there is no way I'm going to put myself through that again (I had "attempted” it once right after college and said I would "never” do that again!). I knew it would be very time consuming and challenging and on top of that, I had a family to take care of now. However, the Lord changed my heart and therefore my attitude about it, allowing me to see it in a totally different light (it still amazes me how He can do that, if we are just willing to let Him….). By His grace and mercy, lots and lots of prayers, and a very supportive family, I was able to pass the exam and earn my license! Having CPA behind my name gives me another opportunity to serve the Lord by helping others through the mine field of taxes and uncertainties associated with small business ownership. I truly count it a blessing to be able to help others in whatever capacity the Lord allows.

3. What memberships do you hold? I am a member of the AICPA (American Institute of CPAs), the TSCPA (Texas Society of CPAs), the NATP (National Association of Tax Professionals), New Braunfels Chamber of Commerce, and the New Braunfels Women's Chamber of Commerce, for which I am on the 2011 Board of Directors.

4. What do you enjoy doing in your "spare time”? I enjoy singing in our Church Choir. I am also currently enrolled in a 3 year Bible study through Faith Bible Institute that works through the Bible chronologically and in great detail during those 3 years. When not attending church activities with my family, I like to travel to new places with my family and just enjoy watching my kids grow up (way to fast, might I add!).

Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths. - Proverbs 3:5-6
